rissymonster: (Pie!)
Things that are bringing me bits of joy right now:

My softball team has had a couple of kickass softball games the last few weeks, and I played so well this evening (multiple stretchy plays and a nearly unheard of (for us) tag play at first, balls hit into the outfield) that the home base umpire complimented me on a game well played. And my forearm is only slightly ouchy to boot. This may bode well for getting on the mat again after Labor Day. I may need a softball userpic. And an Aikido one.

I made a very tasty peach pie this weekend. I have leftover crust, and may experiment.

I'm going camping in Yosemite this weekend, for the first time in thirteen years [Edited to clarify: It's been thirteen years since I last went camping, maybe four since I was last in Yosemite].

Hanging out with folks is lovely.

Da Goobermensch flies out next Tuesday.

Much love to all.

It's not even listed in our crazy-ass rules. Boy, that was a stoopid way to end the game.

It was not my night. I'm playing softball again--on second, so I don't have to throw as much, and trying to draw walks when possible. I'm a pretty decent first basewoman, and pretty mediocre at second (especially when I can't throw).

Icing now. The acupuncturist will yell at me, and my arm's a bit achy, but the need for women was strong.

Go Roots!

So, after a 1-8-1 record last season, my softball team (the Roots) finished in second place this season (5-2-1). Not without a little bit of controversy--the first-place team, whom we beat 2 out of 3 games, had one more win than us, but also played one more game overall.

Tonight was the playoffs--single elimination. We won the first game something like 17-10, then lost the final game by about the same margin to said 1st place team. Our game was a bit off early, but we staged a major comeback in the latter innings. The comeback was a bit thwarted by what pretty much everyone agreed were some bad calls by the refs (seriously, every close call, and some not even close, went against us). Bobsquatch has been an awesome cheerleader the past several games.

Still though, especially after coming in dead last last season, we done good. I also really like playing first base, a position I haven't really played since grammar school.

And then there was beer and chilling with the team afterwards, and now there is snoozy.

Softball starts again tonight. I'm leaving in a few minutes, but I'd just like to note how glad I am that someone told me today that "Chico's Bail Bonds" is a pseudonym (in the original Bad News Bears movie, the team was so bad only Chico's would sponsor them). This being Oakland, in which I've seen City staff sporting Bad Boys Bail Bonds ID lanyards, it seemed entirely plausible that a bail bond company would put up a team in the co-ed league.

"Hey Vinnie, can't afford your bail bond? I'll cut you a break if you plays on our team."

ETA: W00t! We beat Chico's! Something like 9-5 or in that range. And in so doing, tied our number of wins from all of last season. And I caught a ball at first that came in a bit off, and bent so far back to get the ball that I pratfalled. All while keeping one foot on the bag, natch.

My bad news bears style softball team won our first game of the season tonight (we had previously tied a game), against a team that is (or rather, was) tied for first in our league. [N.B. They were down one female, and so needed to take an out once at the end of every rotation. Still, i'm thinking that doesn't quite explain/make up all the difference in our 15-9 victory.]

Woohoo! Bobsquatch is obviously our good luck charm. And I hit the best I've done all season outside of practice (the arc with slow pitch is weird, and throws off my timing).

In recent weeks, I've gotten into the gym at least twice a week for my 20 minutes bike/25-30 minutes elliptical/15 minutes weight machines for the arms. I've gotten in some softball games and practices (the latter providing much more of an actual workout) also.

But I tried to slide into 3rd two weeks ago, Superman-style (and to my great amusement was tagged out anyway), and bruised my lower right leg sufficiently that I only made it back to aikido today, and then only for 1.5 hours of the usual 3 hour tour. I'm pretty sure that if the slide had been angled more on the left side, I'd now be fine. Curse you, lingering injury!
