What's up in Rissylandia

I love me a good long weekend, and now that I've had two in a row (the City gives us Lincoln's B-day as well Presidents' Day), I've been able to catch up on some non-work goodness. I finally seem to be kicking the allergy-induced cold of 3+ weeks that set in after my last trip to the folks for my sister's engagement party at the end of January. It wasn't bad enough to miss work, but by the end of the day I didn't have much energy for anything. So evenings and weekends the last few weeks had consisted of me curled up with soup, blanket and/or Bobsquatch, and Freaks and Geeks (so awesome, in alternately hilarious and painful fashion).
Which is not a terrible way to spend a few weeks (if you take out the hacking up a lung part), but I've liked the last week much better. I actually made it onto the mat the last few aikido classes, and almost made it through the entire 3 hour class today. Our buddy Nikki came to town from Mass. (writer buds out there, she's on Martha's Vineyard for a while; remind me to set up an introduction, even if virtual), and since I had Monday off, I got to see her (and other dojo-folk) much of Sunday and Monday. I also got a massage, shopped for some long-sleeve work-appropriate shirts, did some much-needed bike maintenance and worked out. We had dinner with a friend Friday, and because we both have off tomorrow, are having some buds over for Carcassonne and brunch.
The moral of the story? Not being sick allows for more time for connecting with others and working out, and three day weekends in town are a truly awesome thing. This is obvious, but awesome. Too bad the City doesn't let us do a 5/4 bi-weekly schedule.
The next couple of months bring aikido tests a-plenty (my next is in March), the possibility of a visit from our good buddy Hell from NY, and I'm hoping visits up to Portland and down to Southern California post-testing.
If you're local (or may be local some weekends this spring), I'm trying to work out a grand tour of San Pablo Avenue from stem to stern (with stops at a good portion of the bars, funky shops, restaurants and other attractions along the way) with a friend from work, which we have come to the conclusion will likely need to be undertaken in two or three legs, with the final leg ending up at the Dead Fish in Crockett. We're still a little stuck on transit--biking, cars and public transit each have their pros and cons. If you're interested and/or have stop-off suggestions, give me a yell.
Also, I want to gather a posse for the June 3-4 Orienteering Night and Day challenge (http://baoc.org/wiki/Schedule/2006/SFND) and/or the Roshambo winery's June 3rd "Fourth Annual Southwest Pro-Am Rock, Paper, Scissors Championship" (http://www.roshambowinery.com/events/). Shoot, they're in conflict this year. Bobsquatch and I went to the RPS competition last year and had a great time. I missed the orienteering last year because it was only a month or so after the knee surgery. Hmm.
In other news, I got me one of those Johari windows: http://kevan.org/johari?name=rissymonster
I also got a Nohari window, but I'm less fond of its options for negative adjectives: http://kevan.org/nohari?name=rissymonster
Were I to choose negative adjectives for myself from a wider array of options (aka the english language), I'd go for things like: lazy, gluttonous, standoffish, angry, unforgiving and noncommunicative. Not that I'm these things all or most of the time, but I see them as flaws I'm working on.
Have at ye, at your option.
Hugs!
