Bee Season
Went to the Oakland premiere of Bee Season this evening, with B and a whole mess of co-workers. As my buddy Kathy and I discussed afterwards, it seems like some of the humor that came out more in the book got a little lost, and I suggested it could be the sort of bastard movie child you'd produce if you combined Pi, Spellbound, and Garden State. But it was still interesting, and sweet, and sad, even if Richard Gere skeeves me out. And they did a lovely job with the storage locker, which I had thought might get a little cheesified in movie-land.
But, the real reason I'm posting is that the movie is seriously a paean to Bay Area sights and locations (they very definitively took the liberty of moving the setting to the EastBay), even if the locales get a little mangled in the process ("He's on Lake Merritt, and now he's looking at the Bay?" "That ain't Sacramento; that's the walkway between 250 (the building where I work) and Oakland City Hall"). Lots of Berkeley, Oakland, Piedmont and etc. shots, very nicely satisfying for reasons I'm not entirely sure about.
And whenever you see a bunch of hare krishnas dancing? That's the common hall at the historic rehab project I'm working on (the one that was the source of much anxiety until we closed last week). I think the hospital scenes were filmed there as well. W00t! Every time I go to a construction meeting, I'm going to be tempted to chant.
But now, I'm ready for a nice long weekend.
